Motorola Charm

Quietly this past Wednesday, Motorola unveiled its new candy bar Android phone named the Charm. While it has not received the same fanfare as the Droid X, this phone is special in its own right. As screen real estate becomes more desirable, the candy bar phone has slowly become obsolete. With the exception of RIM Blackberry and Nokia very few companies still produce and promote candy bar style phones. The Charm features a full QWERTY keyboard directly below a 2.8 touchscreen. In addition, it has a new feature called “Backtrack” which enables the user to use a small touchpad on the rear of the phone to control any actions on the screen. The phone also has a 3MP camera with video recording capability, and runs Android 2.1 with Moto Blur.

Personally I am glad that Motorola is trying out this new design although I am not so sure how successful it will be. With in-house competition like the Droid X, Droid, and eventually Droid 2 I am not so sure how this phone will compete. It will be offered on the T-Mobile network, not Verizon, so that should aid in sales. I have always wished RIM would step up to the plate and add a touch screen to their already popular Bold and Curve lines so hopefully this will give them some inspiration.
