Droid X Review

Pros: Beautiful Display with a nice form factor that feels pretty thin.  Many great features and a solid build from Motorola who we know can build a nice Android Device.  The 8.0 MP camera with dual LED flash takes great pictures too! Index your life.

Cons: Unfortunately there is no front facing camera :(

Summary: Great phone, Great features, but is it the game changer that we all wanted?

Droid X. What is it? What does it do? Is it worth it? In short the answer to all three of these questions is “yes.” Yes the answer can be applied to all three of those questions. Lets start from the basics.

The Basics: A beautiful high contrast 4.3″ screen (854 x 480 resolution) that basically goes edge to edge with glass. A Mini USB and mini HDMI port so you can watch and play anything on your phone on your TV (provided it is DLNA ready). Definitely excited about this feature to quickly transfer and watch downloaded content without moving around my laptop. And of course we have Android 2.1 and soon enough 2.2.  This phone will be quick, snappy, and nasty (yes we mean it in a good way) running on its modified Texas Instrument OMAP 1.0 GHz processor.  It is about time an alternative to the Snapdragon was chosen.

Unfortunately Motorola has decided to leave out the front facing camera so video chat/talk will not be available.  This shouldn’t be the deal buster but it does future limit this phone.  The 8.0 MP camera with dual LED flash will be something to reckon with.  The picture come out beautiful and the phone even sports 720p recording at 30 FPS. There should be zero complaints in this department.  The phone isn’t lacking any connections, it has its 3.5 mm audio jack alongside the mini-HDMI and mini USB.  The Iphone 4 may have improved call quality slightly, but compared to the Droid X those improvements could be worthless.  There are 3 microphones positioned around the phone to ensure call quality is a top priority, and being on Verizon’s network surely won’t hurt that factor.

Out of the box, the phone will have 8 gb Internal memory as well as a 16 gb micro sd card.  There is ample space for apps, musics, files, and videos (don’t forget to utilize that DLNA via mini-HDMI!) The 1570 mAh battery will give enough power for the day with some usage here and there.  There are even different profiles such as “Battery-Saver” and “Smart Mode” to alter power consumption.

Being on Verizon’s network, they have began to move over some VCAST content in addition to a new blockbuster partnership and NFL (live game streaming).  Might as well take every advantage of this home theater that now resides in the comfort of your pocket.  Motorola’s Motor Blur is used to skin Android 2.1 but they do give you the choice to not use it this time! Honestly, stock Android is great, and Froyo (2.2) will be even more polished.  And to top it all off, the phone will have Swype, the program that was commercialized as breaking the world texting record on tv.

It seems like Motorola just bested the recent king HTC Incredible.  However what Motorola should be doing is gunning for their future rivals such as the Galaxy S.  Yes this phone is good for now, but we are not thoroughly impressed… however we will admit to being at least, impressed.
